College Tips

Here we are compiling our top tips that every college student should keep in mind that we have heard from readers including some that we encountered ourselves. If you have any tips that you think should also be on this list make a comment and we will be sure to add it if we feel that it fits this appropriately.

  • Plan ahead. It never hurts to do things well out in advance, in fact it might actually help you.
  • Scholarships. Apply for as many as you can when you have free time. It never hurts and you could always use the extra money, even if you don't think you'll need it.
  • Tour and Visit the College Campus - Don't be surprised when you show up, you'll like the school much better if you know what your expecting.
  • Visit your classrooms before the first day - Nothing looks more like a freshmen when you have a schedule in one hand, and a campus map in the other. Also you'll most likely be late if this looks like you. Save some time and hassle by visiting all your classes with some friends.
  • Condense your schedule - Cram as many classes together as possible. This makes it easier to attain a part time job, in addition to walking back and fourth between your housing and your classes.
  • Take a lot of credits at first than back off - Most students find that they attend class a lot less than high school and find a lot of free time. Instead take more credits your first few terms and than back off when your in higher level classes. Not only will your brain thank you later, but so will your wallet.
  • Write down everything you use before you leave for school - This might seem a little bit stupid but it is a good way to remember everything before you forget some things at home. When you are going through your day and you find yourself using the stapler, nail clippers, screw driver, hammer etc. write it down on a list of stuff to bring. If you are using it now most likely you'll want it later.
  • Insurance - Anything of any value make sure your parents home owners insurance covers. If it doesn't try to insure it if possible. For computers use Lo Jack, it is well worth it especially if you are living in a dorm. It is never safe to assume everyone is trustworthy because eventually you'll catch yourself off guard. Also accidental protection on a laptop. What if your friend spills their drink on your laptop? You know you won't but you don't know about others.
  • Locks - Lock everything, your door, your bike, anything that you wouldn't give away. For a bike, make sure you get a U lock or equivalent, chains are no longer safe. If at all possible bring your bike in at night and never leave it on a random bike rack somewhere. The first month of school is also the time that the most amount of bikes are stolen. This is because incoming freshmen are bringing their nice new bike for school.
  • Bring a bike even if you don't think you'll want it - You'll find yourself wanting one eventually, maybe not going to classes. I found that my friends were biking to the store, or going on a bike ride and I didn't have one so I wasn't able to go. It can easily add to your entertainment.
  • Bring games. The more the merrier. - Don't find yourself being bored. Instead bring as many games as you can. Video games, card games, board games, darts etc. You'll find time to use them and you'll make your break time much more appetizing.
